The Grey Cup is the name of both the championship game and the championship trophy awarded to the winning team. The game is played between the winners of the CFL’s East and West divisional playoffs. It is one of the biggest sporting events of the year in Canada and has been played since 1909.

Common CFL Grey Cup Questions:

What was the best ever Grey Cup game?

A lot of people will argue for the 2016 game, but the 1989 game is considered by most to be the greatest Grey Cup game ever played.

The 77th Grey Cup was a real back-and-forth affair between Hamilton and Saskatchewan. Entering the fourth quarter, it was 34-30 in favor of Saskatchewan. A field goal early in the fourth made it 37-30. Hamilton answered with a field goal and then Saskatchewan answered right back. It was 40-33 with under a minute to play.

That’s when Hamilton’s QB Mike Kerrigan marched his team down the field to tie the game. With under a minute left, it looked like a sure thing overtime. Riders QB Kent Austin completed three quick passes to set up a potential game winning field goal.

Dave Ridgway had missed a fifty yarder earlier in the game, but he nailed this one as time expired and the kick would come to be known in Canadian history as “The Kick”.

Why is it called the Grey Cup?

In 1909, a trophy was commissioned by the Earl Grey, then Canada’s governor general. Grey had it made with the intention of donating it for the country’s senior amateur hockey championship. However, the Allan Cup was donated for that same purpose so the Earl Grey made his trophy available as the “Canadian Dominion Football Championship” of Canadian football.

The trophy is similar to the NHL’s Stanley Cup as it has a silver chalice attached to a large base where the names of all of the winning teams, players and executives are engraved. Also much like the Stanley Cup, the Grey Cup has been through some rough times. It has been broken on several occasions, stolen, held for ransom, and even survived a 1947 fire.

Any special Canadian traditions?

Two awards are given for play in the game, Most Valuable Player and the Dick Suderman Trophy as most valuable Canadian player. In a crazy bit of history, there has only been one player to win both awards in the same game when Andrew Harris won both in 2019.

How To Bet the Grey Cup:

Bovada: Right at the top of the page in the “Sports” section of Bovada, click “Football”. Then from the drop-down menu select “CFL” and the Grey Cup should be listed within.

Sports Interaction: Right on the left-hand side of the page click “Football” and this will create a drop down menu. Right from that menu you can find “CFL Games” which is where the Grey Cup odds will be.

888: The easiest way to find the CFL here is to head to the top search bar on the sportsbook and type “CFL”. It will come up immediately and you can bet the Grey Cup from there.

Grey Cup Betting Strategy:

Every Grey Cup is different so I don’t want you to just blindly bet the underdog and the under, but I did find this piece of recent history quite. Between 2014 and 2019, the underdog won against the spread five times and the game went under the posted total five times.

For all of the underdogs, the line was -7 or more while all of the unders were under at least 52.5.
