Where To Bet NHL Player Power Play Points

The power play is when one team gets a penalty and has to go down one player with one in the box. This creates a 5-on-4 advantage for the other team and that advantage is known as the power play. A second player can also get sent to the box, creating a 5-on-3 power play. The power play can really lead to some exciting hockey with one team having such a big advantage and the other team desperately trying to stop them from scoring.

This exciting time of the game also makes it really exciting to bet on as well. Sportsbooks have begun adding “NHL Player Power Play Points” bets and they are a lot of fun to get into.

What are NHL Player Power Play Points bets?

Power play points are points scored while on the power play, simple. As for the bet, it is a simple over/under line that is set prior to the game about which players will score on the power play.

An example would see a player with an over/under total set at 0.5 points. This is for the entire game and points scored on the power play. An over bet means that you believe that player will score one or more points on the power play during the game. An under means that you believe that player will not score on the power play.

The odds on this will skew towards the under with the under being the favorite. That’s because even the very best NHL teams score on the power play less than 30% of the time. The very best team in the league in the 2019-2020 season only scored 59 goals in 71 games. This means that a power play point is in no way guaranteed.

What this means is that the price on betting the over is often more profitable than betting the under, if it comes in.

Common NHL Player Power Play Points Questions:

What qualifies as a power play point?

A power play point is a goal or assist that takes place while on the power play. It doesn’t matter if your player is the one that put it in the net or if they got a secondary assist on the play, as long as they show up on the box score.

What is the record for power play points in a season?

Mario Lemieux ranks first, second, third, and fourth in power play points in a season. His best ever season came at the age of 22 in the 1987-88 season when he recorded 80 power play points in just 77 games.

NHL Player Power Play Points Betting Strategy:

With a bet like this I am far more interested in the teams that are bad at penalty killing than the teams that are good at power plays. Both are important, but I want to focus on players that are facing teams that are more likely to give up points during the power play. Additionally, I would look to target a game with a high over/under total for the game. More goals being scored gives us more opportunity for power play goals.
