A lot of games that I watch I don’t have any rooting interest so I just want to see scoring. Sometimes in that scenario, the best bet to make is on if both teams are going to score. That’s what I am going to get a bit more into today. These bets are a lot of fun because you are just rooting for each team to score. Your rooting interest can change by the minute. You can also bet these for each period of the game.

I’m going to tell you the best place to bet this one as well as how to bet it and my strategy for betting it. Let’s get to it.

A bet on both teams to score is just yet, a bet whether or not both teams will put points on the board. Basically, you are betting for or against one team finishing the game with a shutout.

You can bet this on the full game, but the odds for YES are often so high that it is not really worth betting. Teams simply don’t get shutout as much as they have in the past so this bet pays well for a NO and pays horribly for a YES.

However, you can also use this bet to bet individual periods. You can bet this YES or NO question on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd period of the game. In this case, the odds are more skewed towards NO being the favorite and YES being the underdog. So a YES bet will typically pay more.

Additionally, there is sometimes a prop (also called Both Teams to Score) where you can bet on the amount of goals scored. An example might look like this:

2 or more goals: Yes (1.83) / No (1.83)
3 or more goals: Yes (4.35) / No (1.21)

What this means is that the game will be at least 2-2 or at least 3-3. As you can see, the second bet pays much higher.

The closest any game has got to this record this century took place in 2011 when the Jets and Flyers combined for 17 goals.

Betting on an NHL 1st Period is just like betting on an NHL game. The difference is that it is for the 1st period and 1st period only. Just like those bets, there are three main markets that you can bet on.

Moneyline: This is a straight up bet on who will win the period. If there is one team favored for the full game, they will also be favored in this period. This bet can end in a push if the period ends tied.

Spread: This will be a bet where one team is favored by -0.5 goals and the other team will “get” 0.5 goals. The favorite will be the only laying the goals. They would then need to have at least a 1-0 lead after the first period to win that bet. A tie or lead would be a win for the team that is +0.5.

Total: A total is typically set at 1.5 goals and you can bet over or under on that. If there are two or more goals scored in the period, over wins. If there is one goal or less scored, under wins.

The record for highest scoring 1st Period in NHL history was set way back on March 8th, 1922 when the Montreal Canadiens scored eight goals against the Toronto St. Patricks. An interesting fact about this game is that the Canadiens did not score again and barely hung over for the 8-7 win.

An NHL Team Total bet is an over/under bet on one team. It doesn’t matter the final score of the game, only what the one team’s final score is.

Here’s what an example might look like for a game between the Leafs and Senators.

The Leafs are favored here so they have the higher total. If you think they will score four or more, bet the over. If you think they score three or less, bet the under.

The other thing I like to look at here is rest. Teams in the NHL can often have brutal travel schedules so I like to try and catch them towards the end of one of these trips when things can go bad as they are fatigued.

Plus/minus is a stat you see a lot in the NHL today. It’s a great surface level stat because outscoring your opponent is the key to winning and plus/minus measures exactly that.

It’s also one of the latest stats that have joined the world of betting odds. For years we have been allowed to bet on things like player goals and goalie saves, but never things like plus/minus and shots blocked. No more as sportsbook are starting to offer odds on these new stats as well.

Personally, I’m loving it. The more betting options the better and this is one that is particularly near to my heart as there can be some great values on this one.

The plus/minus stat is pretty easy to understand. A player is awarded a “plus” for every time that they are on the ice and their team scores, whether they are involved in the play or not. They are given a “minus” for each time their opponent scores while they are on the ice. These numbers are then added together to make the plus/minus stat.

For example, if a player is on the ice for two goals for his team and one for the opposing team then they are given a “+1” plus/minus. If they are on the ice for three goals by the opposing team and none for their own team then they would be a “-3” plus/minus.

So, how does this work for betting? Simple, the sportsbook creates an over/under total for the player’s plus/minus that you can choose whether they will be better or worse than.

An example:

Connor McDavid: Over 0.5 (+185) Under 0.5 (-260)

The odds here think that it is likely that McDavid will finish with a 0 or worse plus/minus. If you bet $100 on the over and it came in, it would pay $185. However, if you were to bet under then you would need to bet $260 just to win $100.

Considering the Oilers are favored in this example, McDavid might be a good bet.

Why do people dislike plus/minus as a stat?

One major criticism of this award is that it comes at any time of the game and is not exclusive to times when it is 5-on-5. So, for example, if a team scores while down a man in the penalty box, that would still be a -1 for those players. If they had two men in the penalty box for a 5-on-3, it would still count as a -1 if the other team scored. Additionally, if it is late in the game and your team pulled the goalie leading to an empty netter for the opposing team? That is still a -1!

It’s easy to see why some are critical of this statistic, but the positive of the matter is that the same rules apply to everyone across the league so at least everyone is getting screwed equally.

Blocked shots is a newer stat that has only really been tracked since the 2000s. This stat has helped to show some of the value of a defenseman and has also become a stat that is tracked in fantasy. It can really be a game changer for a daily fantasy team.

The blocked shot has also reached its final form as something that you can bet on. It’s a relatively new betting option with very few websites offering it, but it should only continue to grow in popularity and become available at more sportsbooks.

This article is going to cover more about the blocked shots and how you can bet on them. There is money to be made betting on this so let’s get right into it.

The NHL defines a blocked shot as a shot attempt that is blocked by a player who is not the goalie. The most common that you see is a player laying down on a play to block the shot, but a shot may be blocked by any part of the defender or the defender’s equipment for it to count.

The way the blocked shot works for betting is a simple over/under total.

A player will be given an over/under of 1.5 blocked shots and you will bet whether you think it will be more (over) or less (under) than that amount. There is a price attached to this as well so a strong defenseman will have a total of 1.5 with a price of -120. This means you’d need to bet $120 to win $100. While a player not known for their blocking will have the same 1.5 total, but a price of +150. This means a $100 bet would win $150 on an over.

The power play is when one team gets a penalty and has to go down one player with one in the box. This creates a 5-on-4 advantage for the other team and that advantage is known as the power play. A second player can also get sent to the box, creating a 5-on-3 power play. Power play points are points scored while on the power play, simple. As for the bet, it is a simple over/under line that is set prior to the game about which players will score on the power play.

An example would see a player with an over/under total set at 0.5 points. This is for the entire game and points scored on the power play. There are two ways that sportsbooks offer NHL Player Assists betting, “at least” and over/under.

At Least: If you are betting on “At Least” then you are given a number of assists starting at one. In this case, you are just hoping for that player to have at least one assist in order to win the bet.

A fun thing about this bet is that you can change the amount to two and get some really great odds. For instance, a high scoring player might be relatively close to even at +125 to finish with one assist. If you set that number to two assists, his odds jump to +700.

Over/Under: They way this one works is that a total is set at 0.5 assists and you can bet if that will go over or under. Under will, obviously, mean no assists. While over would mean one or more.

With this betting option, there will be a price set on each side. A star player like Patrick Kane would see his over 0.5 set at -140 while his under would be +100. While a defenseman like Duncan Keith, who doesn’t get a ton of assists, would see his over with a line of +175 and his under at -250.

How do assists work in NHL?

An assist in the NHL is attributed to up to two players of the scoring team who either shot, passed or deflected the puck towards their teammate who scored the goal.

A primary assist is when you make a play that directly leads to the goal. While the secondary assist would be considered the pass that lead to the pass that lead to the goal.

For the purposes of betting, there is no difference between the primary and secondary assist. So even if the player made the pass that lead to the pass, you would still get the win if you bet them to have an assist.

How to Bet NHL Player Assists:

BetOnline: Click “hocley” on the left sidebar and this will bring up the list of games. Click on the “+” sign on the far right of the game’s odds and this will load the player props including assists.

Bovada: Click “Hockey” at the top of the page and this will take you to a list of the day’s NHL games. You will see an area that says something like “+68 bets”. Click that and then you will see a “Prop Builder” section with options for assists.

You have to start by looking at the over/under for each game. I like to go with one of the higher ones of the day as we can find a team that is most definitely not getting shutout. From there I look at who is playing well of late and the lines that they are playing on. From there I find the best line to bet on this.

Where To Bet NHL Player Shots On Goal

One fun bet you can make on the NHL is in regard to player shots.

The most common bet in regard to the NHL player shot prop bet is that the sportsbook set a line on the amount of shots that a player will have on goal, and you then have to determine whether the player will have more than that amount or less than.

It’s known as an over/under bet on player shots.

There is also a slight variation to that bet which I will cover below. Let’s jump into where to actually bet the over/under on player shots NHL prop bet.

Where To Bet NHL Player Shots

America: There are two solid options. The first is Bovada. They offer the ability to bet total shots over/under per game for players. There is a big variety. So if you are American and want to bet on the over/under shots, then Bovada is the way to go.

If you are American and wish to bet on the “At Least” market, you will go with BetOnline. That’s because they allow you to say a player will have “at least ___ shots on goal” and you can choose the number of shots you think they will have. So if you think Crosby is going to have 5 shots in a game and the sportsbook is only offering over 2.5 shots on goal, you could use this market to change it to “At Least 5” and then get a much better price return.

What NHL Player Shot Prop Bets Are There?

There are the two variants mentioned above. To break them down into a bit more detail:

Over/Under Player Shots: The sportsbook sets a line, and you have to bet whether the player will shoot on goal more or less than that specific line. So for example Sidney Crosby may have the line set at 2.5 shots on goal. You will then either bet that he will have more than 2.5 shots on goal, or bet that he will have less than 2.5 shots on goal. So if he only has 2 shots the “under” wins while if he has at least 3 shots, then the “over” will win.

At Least ___ Player Shots: With this one, you will bet on the amount of player shots a player will have at least. So you can say “Crosby will have at least 3 shots on goal”. If he has at least 3 shots, you win. What’s neat about that is you can change the quantity of shots and get better odds. So “At least 3 shots” is -130 but you could bet “At least 4 shots” for +177 etc.

No they do not. That is a blocked shot. Shots on goal are shots that the goalie either saves, or they go in the net for an actual goal.

How to Bet NHL Player Shots on Goal

Bovada: Under their hockey section, click on the game where you want to bet on a players shots on goal. You will likely have to scroll down and look for the “Total Shots On Goal in the Game” area where there will be a list of them for each individual player. The line will be there along with the odds for over and under and you click on the one that you want to bet on.

BetOnline: In their NHL category, click on the game that you wish to place this bet on to expand it. Within that section there is the “Props” category and you will see the “Shots On Goal (At Least)” section. Expand that then use the drop down menus.

Bet365 Sportsbook: It’s buried away a little bit. Go to Hockey, then NHL, then click on the game you want. Then from there click the “Score” tab and it should be listed there.

The nice thing is you have a lot of historical data so use that to figure this out. Or as you go along during an NHL season, take some time to look at it and trends.

Trends are the way to go to crack this one. For example – and it depends on the team and player – but you’ll see a different in shots on goal depending on whether the team is a favourite or an underdog. So that sort of thing is what you want to look for. Also look into advanced metrics. Who lets in the most HDCA? And what players on the team playing against them generally rack up more shots on goal when their team has a high HDCF?

The data is there you just have to spend a bit of time researching it.

“He shoots, he scores” is probably the most commonly heard and exciting phrase in hockey. We all know that we can bet on the second part of that statement, but did you know that you can bet on the first part too? Betting on a player to simply get shots on goal sounds like something that would be relatively easy, but it can be quite challenging as well. You never know how the other team is going to defend him or if the player will be more focused on setting up teammate’s on that date. It can be tough to fully crack, but it is also a lot of fun and makes for an exciting game within a game.

Betting on player shots on goal is done in two ways. The first is betting an over/under amount that is set by the sportsbook on the amount of shots a player will take in a game. The second is a number that is set that the player needs to hit “at least” that amount of shots.

Over/Under: The player shots over/under is a number that is set that you have to bet over, meaning more, or under, mean less than, on.

A good example of this would be a player like Jakob Silfverberg of the Anaheim Ducks. For a game his total is set at 1.5 over. However, that 1.5 comes with a price of -200. That means you’d need to bet $200 to win $100. This is because it is very likely that he will go over that amount. If you were to bet under 1.5, the price would be +150. This means that a $100 bet would win $150 if he ended with less than 1.5 shots on goal.

At Least: This is a number that the player must hit “at least” that amount of shots. So, a player like Conor McDavid would have his number set at four shots. If he finishes with 4 shots on goal, you win. The price on this would be something like -130.

Now, a fun thing about the at least bet is that you can change the number of shots. You could make it less and pay a higher price or more and get better odds. For instance, for the game I am looking at you can set the number as high as 8 which would pay out at +1120.

Short answer: no.

It doesn’t matter if he shoots and scores or just shoots, as long as he hits the amount of shots that you want him to hit then you win.

What is the averaging shooting percentage of NHL players?

A typical NHL player shoots at about 9 percent. Meaning that they score nine goals per 100 shots.

I’m not sure why but betting on NHL goalies is always one of my favourite bets to make.

I think just because from a statistical standpoint, it can be fairly simple to look at and break down. You’re not betting on the exact quantity of saves a goalie will make – that would be insane. Instead the sportsbook sets a line on how many saves a goalie will make, and presents an over/under on that line.

It’s much like goals. You know how you can bet on over or under 6.5 goals in a game? It’s a similar deal.

The sportsbook sets a line of 26.5 saves as an example. You then have to bet whether that goalie will have over 26.5 saves or under 26.5 saves. Nice and simple.

It’s one of the only goalie props you can make. The other one is whether or not a goalie will record a shoutout in a game. So let’s cover where to bet NHL Goalie Saves.

Where To Bet NHL Goalie Saves

America: The best place to bet on NHL Goalie Saves is BetOnline. The reason for that is they offer this line with consistency. I’ve found that while other sportsbooks such as Bovada will offer this line, they don’t offer it all the time and that can be frustrating. That’s the nice thing about BetOnline is they offer it every game and every game day.

It’s also very flexible there as you can up the amount of saves if you want. So they may offer Carter Hart at 29 saves for -120. If you think his opponents are going to shoot a lot more on him, you could raise it to at least 35 shots for +295 odds. Some very nice lfexibility.

What are NHL Goalie Save Bets?

These are the NHL Goalie Save bets available and how they work.

Over/Under: In this one, the sportsbook sets a number and you have to decide if they will make over that amount of saves or under it. For example, Carter Hart has his line set at 26.5 saves for the game. If he makes 27 or more saves, then the “over” bet wins as it is more than 26.5. If he makes 26 or less saves, then the “under” bet wins.

They do the .5 so that there is no chance of a tie and you will either win or lose.

At Least X Saves: In this one you’re betting the amount of saves the goalie will make at least. It’s not too different from betting the “Over” in the over/under bet execpt it has more flexibility in terms of being able to move the betting line, and then getting better odds.

Can I REALLY bet that a Goalie will NOT record a shutout?:

Yes you can. But don’t get too excited. The odds honestly don’t make it worth it I’d say. They are odds like 1.03 meaning you have to risk $100 just to win $3. Of course it’s up to you but man that is one risky proposition.

How to Bet NHL Goalie Saves Prop Bet

BetOnline: Within their NHL section, choose the game you wish to bet this one at and click to expand it. It will then list the props within there and it is under “Saves (At Least)”. Click that and you will be presented with a drop down where you can choose the saves amount and see the odds.

Bet365 Sportsbook: It’s located under “Score” after clicking on a game. Like if you click on Penguins vs Flyers to expand all the odds available, you then click the “Score” tab and all the props are available there including the goalie saves over/under and the shutout bet.

NHL Goalie Save Prop Bets Betting Strategy:

This one can be quite easy as you have lots of historical data to look at.

Spend some time going through data for a particular goalie. Pick one goalie and go with that. Look through his quantity of saves in games over the course of an entire season.

Figure out the reasoning for it. In the 2019-2020 season for example, Carey Price made 17 saves against Minnesota on October 17th but 30 saves against the Ottawa Senators on February 22nd. Why? What was the difference? What impacts that?

It’s fairly simple – figure out why a team will allow more shots against. What factors there are. Then you can bet accordingly based on that. You’re not going to figure it out too much based on actual saves but the shots against stat is what you want to figure out. Look into advanced metrics and see how those impact that too.
