Where To Bet NFL Defensive Player Props

Graeme

While the defensive players in the NFL don’t get quite the same level of publicity as the quarterbacks and other offensive players in the league do, they are still really important to the game and can change the game just the same. Much like the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and running backs in this league, you can also bet on the statistics of the defensive players.

This betting market can be a lot of fun and some of the bets pay off very well. Whether you are interested in betting on player tackles, player interceptions, or player sacks, this is the article for you. I’m going to cover everything you need to know about betting on defensive player props.

Continue reading to learn more about how to bet NFL Defensive Player props, where to bet them, and how to bet them. Let’s get into it.

What are NFL Defensive Player Props?

There are numerous player props that you can bet on defensive players for an average NFL game.

Player Defensive Tackles: Tackles are the lifeblood of a defense and the simplest bet you can make, but they still aren’t easy. The totals are set with odds that are close to a coin flip.

An example of the defensive tackle odds:

Bashaud Breeland – Over 2.5 (-160) / Under 2.5 (+130)
Eric Kendricks – Over 5.5 (-110) / Under 5.5 (-120)

Player Defensive Assists: This is a bit of a tricky one because you are betting only on assisting tackles. The totals are set low, but you are still hoping that players get the tackle, but not by themselves.

Here are a couple of examples of what the line might look like:

Eric Kendricks – Over 2.5 (-165) / Under 2.5 (+135)
Xavier Woods – Over 1.5 (+110) / Under 1.5 (-140)

Player Tackles and Assists: This is a combination of the above two bets with a total set on the total amount of tackles and assists a player will manage in a game. It doesn’t matter if they have more tackles or more assists, as long as they go over or under the total amount listed.

Some examples:

Devin Bush – Over 4.5 (-140) / Under 4.5 (+110)
Minkah Fitzpatrick – Over 7.5 (-110) / Under 7.5 (-120)

Different types of players will have different totals.

Player to Record a Defensive Sack: Sacks are rare in the NFL, but their not that rare. Teams rush like never before and there are players on the field who specialize in getting to the quarterback. This one isn’t exactly easy to pick and can pay pretty well, but it’s not the hardest of the bets around.

For example, a sack specialist like TJ Watt would have a line that looked something like this:

TJ Watt to record a sack – YES (-145) / NO (+115)

He is known for his sacking skills so “Yes” is actually a small favorite. For other players who have lower totals, the odds will be better.

Player Defensive Interceptions: This may be the hardest defensive player prop to bet of all as there is no guarantee that an interception will have in a game like there is with a tackle or an assist. You are not only betting on whether or not it will happen, but also who will do it. Based on the likelihood of it happening, the odds on this one are very good if you want to bet over and very poor if you want to bet under.

For example, this is what the Vikings defense might look like on any given Sunday.

Bashaud Breeland – Over 0.5 (+650) / Under 0.5 (-1050)
Patrick Peterson – Over 0.5 (+575) / Under 0.5 (-900)

As you can see yes or over 0.5 interceptions pays very well.

What is a tackle assist?

If you’re going to bet on a tackle assist, it’s best to know what they are. A tackle assist is awarded when an opposing player is tackled by at least two players. The way that it is awarded is by the statistician in the stadium who makes the determination whether a player deserves a solo tackle or if two players deserve an assist with no solo tackle on the play.

It is rare for more than two players to be credited with an assisted tackle, but not impossible.

How to Bet NFL Defensive Player Props:

Bet365 Sportsbook: Enter the football section of the sportsbook and you will see the NFL betting options. Head to the tab marked “Player Props” and click that. This will show all of the available props for the weekend, including defensive player props.

NFL Defensive Player Props Betting Strategy:

I think the best way to bet on defensive player props if you’re just looking to make money is to bet on player tackles. The totals are typically pretty fair and picking a player you think will be involved in the defense to go over is the best way to go.

Now, if you’re looking for a lottery ticket and a chance to hit big then you have to go with the interception prop. Even the best quarterback in the league will throw a few picks and betting on someone to get one can pay off very well. I typically like to look for the receivers who are known for going deep and figuring out who will be covering them, and then betting on that player to get one.
